Want to write a long post on government as a series of well funded failures, it can't ACTUALLY fail, cause it always gets more money and Many of the bills are covered, but a success story it is not - I feel we are getting close to a real failure that is at least for a short time unrecoverable - still marshalling my thoughts and reading to flesh this out...

I'd rather be sleeping... but, whirling brain syndrome this early a.m. (its about 4:30)
A kind of chaotic chain of postulated connections this morning as in: why the 40Th anniversary of Apollo, yet such a low grade effort by our society to return to space for half a lifetime... only now beginning to renew the effort...
Yesterday, read an article about the benefits of cold-soaking aluminum, steel and plastic parts at -300 F, causes the atomic structure to re-arrange resulting in hardening and toughening (when done correctly) the material in question (if this isn't a logical space industry app, I don't know what is...)
And yet, during that 40 years we had no difficulty funding a multitude of wars, open or covert and meddling in the internal affairs of a long list of countries for dubious gains and ideological justifications that appeared plausible in the news of the day, but retroactively seem ludicrous, or ill founded, or just plain dis-honest manipulations by the clique in power at that moment.
The parallels to the current wastes in Afghanistan and Iraq seem a perpetuation of this mentality ( frootloop president hastily starts a war, mostly with the wrong country -it takes on a life of its own and is still going...?!) And if all the Taliban are slaughtered in the next few years, the world will still not be a safe place, for remember - our meddling created the conditions that started the Taliban to begin with...
...And much of this foolishness stems from peoples unwillingness to act with maturity, to quit relying on gods, devils, or doctrine to back up thier decisions, to stand on your own feeble paws and face that its a big hostile universe.
All the burning incense, chanting mantras, or slaughtering various groups is not any kind of answer, and in the end leaves more reasons for seperation and conflict than you started with. As a species we MUST grow up and face the future.

Random thoughts about 9/11:
I'm sure its all been said before:
But....
The Bush administration rushed the country into 2 wars, radically altered the right to privacy, undermined endless hard won freedoms, circumvented the judicial system, created a huge draconian government agency we'll never be rid of and (mis) spent 3/4 of a trillion dollars in various ways....
one of the many justifications is the 3-4000 deaths...
and not to belittle the tragedy of it all, lets be realistic and have a sense of perspective:
while those 3500+ lives where wiped out in a dramatic and highly visible way, seeking JUSTICE and punishing the GUILTY were never in the discussion - 2 countries with a cumulative population of (roughly) 62 million were attacked for the (alleged) acts of 20 guys mainly from Saudi Arabia,
on the day those 3500+ people died in and around the twin towers:
6000 other people died in the US from all the usual causes
and more critically, 12000 babies born that day in the US, and every other day
and yet many people in the hysteria of the moment thought it wise to undo 200 years of legal and legislative practice and throw out everything! truly insane!
The cowardly pigs who decided to back all these changes are the real enemy of the United States. This country has weathered much greater challenges throughout its history than 9/11 without all the hysteria.
(CIA Fact book Numbers)
Afghanistan , 33,609,937 (July 2009 est.)
Iraq , 28,945,657 (July 2009 est.)
sum 62,555,594 people
While Iraq has been shown to have had nothing to do with anything relating to 9/11 somewhere between 95,000 and 1.03 million violent deaths have taken place there since the war was (illegally) declared.
While Saddam may have been an SOB of the first water, he did run a mainly secular government and managed to keep the lid on a factionalized and turbulent country - the biggest losers in our noble effort has been Iraqi women. The ministry of education under Saddam provided education, women were out in the open able to get jobs and advance in the workplace, Iraq was a very progressive Islamic country and had substantial opportunity for women - today Iraqi women are much more in danger than at any time during Saddam's reign.
This is progress?
Afghans, some of the poorest people on earth, exploited by the CIA created mujaheddin to fight the Russians in a war engineered in Washington were put at risk yet again for a feel-good spasm of righteous rage and fear, while Osama was supposedly a high priority target the number of troops deployed to Afghanistan was less than the number of cops in New York City (about 10,000)... but the number of troops dumped into Iraq was 130,000. Who still believes ANYTHING the Bush administration said about the intents and purposes of the war?
But nothing, not even the complete destruction of Washington or New York would have justified the course we've taken both domestically or internationally, because our Governments stated intents and its actions still do not match, dragging Pakistan (172 million people) and Iran (66 million) into the fray will insure that military conscription will become mandatory - just to keep replacements rolling in..

A brief discourse on religion:
Core premise: Religion rests on a foundation of basic primate psychology, as harnessed and directed by a “ruling class” and modified by a genetic based peculiarity of modern physiological differences throughout the population.
We are all born into the world naked, wet, and hungry.
If not for a benevolent external force, to protect, feed and teach us, we would likely die.
Initially this need is filled by our parents or caretakers.
As we become more self aware, it becomes apparent that our parents are -almost- as baffled as we are about how things work. The onset of puberty hits about the time this self awareness begins, which further confuses things. (Hormone induced irrationality - in many species young members forever part from their parents at this point)
In humans the desire for a benevolent external force continues, even though it ceases to serve a beneficial purpose, since our parents lose their omnipotent status, and progressively become more “peers” than “superiors” as we age.
The “God” concept satisfies what is basically an infant primate's emotional need, brought about by their initial helplessness, extended infancy, and lengthy development.
(For a detailed discourse on the history of religion, see elsewhere)
This basic need was harnessed by those who wished to control: first the medicine man, then the priest, then perhaps the Pharaoh, all of whom are subject to the same unfulfilled need, so it is a self perpetuating and attractive proposition...
In parallel to this, a secular government also began to arise, to handle the more practical matters of "earthly" life, like war, or irrigation, or civil engineering while the religious class invented endless detail about the popular gods of the period. In so called "primitive" societies enormous pantheons of gods to handle every imaginable event or circumstance in life (the modern equivalent to legislation, that attempts the same thing: namely to address each individual circumstance individually, instead of the more criteria based approach of science or engineering) so the older a religion, typically the more complex it is, since at its inception it had to encompass a societies entire world view to stay consistent with the observational powers of a societies members. Later religions are simpler since a world view was already well established and mature, so it only had to address the “Spiritual” aspects of a worldview.
As secular government manages the basic needs of a society (whether this management is needed, or simply benefits the managers) it inherently gathers collective power to itself, where religious government provides administration of law (tribal rules) that are initially attributed to a god and in modern societies have spun off into elements of secular management (Federal and state law) religious government over time cedes authority to secular management since gods (and their self appointed conduits) make minimal contribution to the practical business of hoeing the fields, regulating commerce etc.
And eventually religion takes its place as it’s reflected in the modern (western) world, something that influences politics and popular opinion and proclaims itself an authority on morality.
And this would be the end of the matter (a nearly steady state of asymptotic decline in religious influence) if not for two compounding factors: Tradition. And a peculiar variation in brain architecture – you may (or may not) remember a Time article called “god vs. Science” and the whole groundswell of additional articles and books preceding and following it showing that roughly 50% of individuals are neurologically capable of having “religious” experiences and that, conversely, the other half don’t. This insures that religious conflict will likely be with us indefinitely unless a conscious effort is made by one half to convert the other half.
(Ok you caught me! This paragraph is firmly tongue-in-cheek)
Since the basis is genetic, it’s likely that retroactive birth control is the only method likely to yield measurable results. Given the moral complexity of that approach, it is unlikely to be enacted unless some dramatically polarizing event influences popular perception about the significance of the rift. And the desirability thereof…
So the genetic predilection: is it a beneficial survival mechanism? Gives us the ability to form social groups (Tribalism? A leader-follower instinct, something else?) or is it some mammal holdover, an accident, or may be a brain defect, built right into half of us?
That combined with this inherent longing for SOMETHING to care for us in a generally indifferent universe has one guaranteed effect: it makes at least 50% of our population nearly incapable of resisting the premise that some external force exists, and that it is interested in their lives.
This firmly places the tools of manipulation in the hands of those perceptive enough to recognize it, and ruthless enough to indoctrinate rather than educate.

Can You Dig it?
Spending much time in the "Hole" this weekend, trying to make progress...
Whats that? you dont know what I'm talking about?
well here, let me show you my hole:
its big, and round, and its in the ground -
Here's what I plan to put in it......
Well, not exactly... I hope to arrange them more like this:
slate roof, limestone walls, maybe a little stained glass, you know - the usual - for now tho, its back to the hole....

So....
Enjoying the post apocalyptic glow that comes of reading the news. Man!, what a mess! Currently its the:
Auto Bailout
Sold to congress and the General Public as an attempt to "Save" Detroit and preserve domestic jobs...
odd the "Big 3" spent so much lobbying themselves out of being competitive - rather than spending on research into fuel efficient vehicles that kept at par with Europe and Asia - maybe we wouldn't have bought them - but I think if GM were as reliable as Honda - less people would buy Hondas.....
The Madoff scandal : This one is really funny! (is the pronunciation: Made-off?) Large jewish investment house turns out to be a scam, but a huge proportion of the impact is felt in the jewish community... so Madoff (a scumbag) steals from charities to give to charities - to make himself look good, and on and on...
Fully justifies my support for Government and Private Surveillance, i.e. the Government and Business leadership should be under 24/7 surveillance!
Works like this: in Government - any high state or federal position carries these 2 conditions: term limits of 10 total years in service. Government should be SERVICE, not a career, better to tap the input of more people for less time each, than have career politicians holding down office for life.
But secondly: Monitoring 24/7. If we accept the premise that rights are counterbalanced by duties, that is, for each privilege given there is an commensurate obligation, then the privilege of office is offset by the burden of monitoring, this takes "trust" out of the formula and renders government a measurable process that has clear duties, clear standards, and less opportunity for the kind of creativity that should so often lead to indictments.
For private industry this model is more problematic, but the standard could be established based on "scope of influence" as in: if an executives decisions can impact 10's of thousands of lives, then perhaps the same general principle should apply? Seems reasonable to me at least...
additional afterthought on Madoff: The darker side of the Madoff scam is that the losses are like a marker dye and reveal the insular relationship between jewish organizations in the US. A whole economy of "separateness" exists... How is it that a group of people with 1.8% of the US population can occupy so many influential positions? Example: as of the end of 2007 13% of the Senate is jewish... One possible answer: nepotism. Too many choices are made based on religion or community ties rather than merit, and that is discrimination, which we're supposed to be past tolerating.
Blagojevitch: what is the real story here? Is this guy a dirtbag? or is this part of something else? Political sacrificial lambs are often used for purposes other than what is on the label... So, either Rod screwed up, or forces are in motion to discredit him for some other purpose, wait and see and watch to whom it leads... ya know,"government prosecutors revealed new information today in the Blagogate scandal..." IF he goes down, there is no certainty, BUT if it blows over, it was a distraction and something else is afoot.
